review 1: If I remember correctly, Troubled Waters was a young adult novel, albeit with fairly challenging concepts. Shinn has obviously decided books are more interesting when her characters can actually have sex.Well, sex between the romantic leads doesn't save this book. There were a few interesting elements, but it felt fatty and unfocused. I was constantly torn between compassion for Corene because her mother didn't love her, and irritation that she was so prickly when other people wanted to love and comfort and befriend her.I know Shinn likes to linger in the worlds that she creates, examine the world through the eyes of other characters. Sometimes it works for me just as well; this time it didn't.
review 2: Love this world. There are problems, but I'll take imperf... moreect fiction within an intriguing world. Gladly. The main characters were less annoying than the main character in the first book, Troubled Waters. Looking forward to the inevitable sequel.The idea of "blessings" and personality types fascinates me and I can't stop thinking about what our world would be like if we were more aware of our "type," spiritual blessings and honored them. less
