review 1: IDK how I feel about this. The worldbuilding was stellar - Shinn is always great on that front - but I felt like a lot of the book lacked urgency, somehow (right up until the last 50-100 pages, where suddenly SHIT WAS GETTING REAL). Which, tbh, felt very in-tune with the whole water-theme that she's rocking with this book, so I don't even know that it was a bad thing? IDK IDK. I enjoyed it immensely! And I'm pumped that the next book is apparently about Josetta, who was one of my favorites in this book.
review 2: The first hundred pages were painful to read- nothing was happening. No plot was being built up, the world building was tedious and I was left wondering whether I should finish reading. But it picked up quickly after that with very satisfyingly wi... moretty and clever characters. I could hardly put the book down until the end. Like the beginning, I was unsatisfied with the ending scene- not because it was random, but because I felt loose ends could have been tied up in a little more detail. Everything is kind of concluded in a passive hurry.However, the bulk of the read was still so enjoyable that it deserves 4 stars. less
