review 1: In the early 1950's, Donna is a high school student who is a mother and sister to her younger brother, Will. Their mom is dead and their dad is engulfed in his grief. A television show about Alaska pairs with a cereal company for promotion: send in ten box tops and receive a deed for a square inch of Alaska. Will becomes ill, yet the two of them go on an unforgettable trip. The characters are so real and believable; the dialogue flows smoothly and quickly. All is not as it seems! A very satisfying read.
review 2: I quite enjoyed this novel, largely because Donna, the main character in this coming of age story, is very likable and mature for her age. Burdened at an early age with a mother who could never handle children and then disappeared from their lives,
... more presumably dead, and a father who sought solace in alcohol, Donna is the loving caretaker of her little brother. Not only does she experience the typical teenage events such as falling in love, working several jobs, finding a mentor and dealing with adult frustrations, she also discovers the truth about her mother, fulfills her brother's dream before he succumbs to an illness and manages to get close to her own goals. Although definitely sad in parts, this is an overall uplifting read. less
