review 1: This book was a Christmas gift from my daughter. If you remember the Kingston trio song you will enjoy this book. A man named Tom Dula was tried, convicted and hanged for murder in Statesville, N. Carolina in 1868. The author did a lot of research, reading the original trial transcript and consulting Census records to recreate what happened, including new information. Ex NC governor Zebulon Vance defended Dula pro bono. After I read it, my wife, daughter and various in-laws read it and all enjoyed it, recommending it to others, so much so that it took a year to come back to me
review 2: Sharyn McCrumb's work is a gripping, dark work. Her end notes explain her meticulous research into the story that became the song. The main character, Pauline, is sick both
... more mentally and physically. Destitute post-war Appalachia is as hopeless as the character's lives. Things would be bad enough, but, Pauline's deranged mind plots to make things worse. Our need for an objective narrator is filled by former North Carolina Governor, Zebulon Vance. He was the lawyer for Tom Dula (Dooley). He does his best to make sense of this grim historical episode. This book haunted me till I could finish it. Fortunately, the rest of my library stack was balanced with optimism. less

Very repetitive. A good story, but seemed like it was stretched from a short story to fill a book.

A slightly dark but good story.
