review 1: Soooooooooooooooooo disappointed!! I usually love Sharyn McCrumb, but this book was very hard to read. I realize it is based on a Revolutionary battle, but still, the characters could have been more interesting. And she labels it a "ballad" novel, which usually means there are supernatural elements in it, but there was only one. The characters are based on real people, and I do appreciate their help in getting us free of England, but man, it was tough. Ok, I admit it, I stopped reading at page 113, read a chapter near the end, and then skipped to the epilogue. I don't feel as if I missed anything. I usually only give a book 50, but I love this author, so I kept hoping it would get better. It never did. I'm rather sad.
review 2: I have always enjoyed Ms McCrumb's
... more writing. She knows the people of Appalachia and writes about them with pride and warmth. I was especially interested in this book as one of my North Carolina ancestors was an Over Mountain man. I have always been proud of that line of my family but more so today after reading King's Mountain. As I read the book, I see many similarities between the Mountain Men of the 1700s and their progeny who live on in the mountains today! A fierce loyalty to the land and a pride that says, Bring it On is evident in many of the mountaineers who have Scotch Irish blood running in their veins. Another job well don Ms McCrumb!! less

I never finished the book. Found it too boring. Just couldn't get into it.

This was not a typical Ballad book by McCrumb. Well researched.
