review 1: I am glad I read these stories. Stories are my least favorite genre. And these are not my favorite collection of stories. They are well told. Mostly they operate with a Mormon setting, both old and new. The stories are imaginative and well-written. What I am looking for in a story is to see a new world, one I haven’t imagined before. Or, I hope to read a story which encourages me or challenges me. These did not do that for me. At the same time, they were good writing - they told a story, they were not too packed with extraneous things. It was good. It wasn’t extraordinary, in my eyes.
review 2: With addicting short stories that kept me coming back to flip pages, I felt a resonance with Vestal's characters who lived in Idaho as outsiders to the LD... moreS way of life. These stories were filled with dark secrets for which the LDS way proved no help for the characters. Rather, darkness was shamed and it ostracized those in the story; instead of redemption, each character smashes into a wall, a wall with could have had graffiti on it that read: "You cannot enter until you match the standard we hold." less
