review 1: 3 stories about three dogs who served in 3 different wars. Each dog helped the military in a special way. Boots served during World War I and would go into the battlefield after each skirmish to look for any victims who were still living. Loki served in Greenland in World War II as part of a pack of dogs used for a dog sled to get around the area searching for the enemy. Sheba was used in Vietnam to help alert soldiers to hidden Viet Cong and booby traps. Some good insights about these wars, along with the amazing stories about the dogs who served vital purposes.

Many kids won’t yet have the historical knowledge to really understand what is happening in these stories, but this book is a good introduction to these conflicts. The stories are really well-drawn, intense and exciting, with realistic amounts of violence. 5th grade and up. less
