review 1: When your female editor in chief gives you a book about a female journalist you kinda have to read it. That's how I came to read my very first chick flick. And boy, was I in for a surprise. I was thoroughly prepared for a thin plot, two dimensional characters and bad writing, but I thought the very name of the genre comes from something affirmative for women. Instead, the main protagonist is spectacularly uninspirational. Nothing that happens to her is her own decision, and the one decision she does make fails to bring a climax to the plot. People might say that the writer's intention was to make a relatable character, someone ordinary, but that's just an excuse for bad writing. If this is what modern literature for women has come to, woe to us. review 2: I used to be a big Sheila O'Flanagan fan but I've struggled with her books in the last few years and very nearly didn't bother to try Better Together.I'm glad I did read it though because I thought this book is her best book ever. It was different in that there was a real mystery to be solved, some intriguing glimpses at things which had happened for the characters in the past and which were now affecting their future. I honestly didn't know what was going to happen in terms of the mystery or the romance elements of the book.An involving, intriguing and hugely enjoyable read. I'm a Sheila O'Flanagan fan again! less
