Chicago World's Fair Mystery
review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn't stop reading it until it was done. The mystery was intriguing. I thought it might involve HH Holmes who was a real life murder at the world's fair in Chicago, but this book was strictly fiction, not historical fiction, so no Holmes. The curiosity about whether or not Holmes was going to be the murderer probably made me more eager to finish the book than I might otherwise have been, but it is a well written book and a well thought out plot. The author is a Christian, so there are many times in the book where a character thinks about how something that is going on relates to her religious beliefs. At first I thought it was odd to bring it up so often in a book, but then I got to thinking about it as it relates to me. I'm a Christian... more and I think like this main character does. I pray in my mind during the day as life goes along. I believe people are put in our paths to help us. This realization made the dialogue seem normal and comfortable, not forced. I realized that I'm just not used to reading books with a religious main character. If you don't believe in God or Jesus, then you might find the book preachy, I guess, but I think it's a good little mystery and a sweet little romance, so it's worth the read. You can appreciate the religious devotion if you are inclined or skim over it if you aren't.
review 2: A wonderful start to a new series! Secrets of Sloane House takes place in 1893 Chicago during the World's Fair. The story captivates the reader from Chapter 1 and had me guessing until the end. Rosalind takes a job as a maid for a wealthy family so she can uncover what really caused her sister to go missing. Along the way she befriends Reid who comes from an upper class family. This book encompasses all the elements of a great story. Shelley draws the reader into the setting so well, I love that about her books! The next book in this series will be released in Spring 2015! less

Not amazing, but it was better than I expected. More on the side of 3.5 stars, actually.
