review 1: This book sat on my bookshelf for over a year before I read it. The main reason why I was so reluctant to start it is because I have an Autistic son and I was really worried about how hard it would be to read the story of a young boy with Autism living in such a suspicious and cruel era. Actually the story turned out to be different to what I imagined it would be in some ways, Manfred isn't victimised and his Autistic traits aren't even noticed by the villagers until his gift of singing is discovered, then he's celebrated, seen as an angel but of course this is soon used to hurt and label people, resulting in scores of people being burnt as witches, he becomes dangerous along with the children who have been pulled into this continuous assault on people's religious beliefs ... moreand their willingness to believe that evil is among us all the time. This isn't a book about a child with Autism, it's a book about how yet another village was overcome by hysteria, like Salem where it became the innocents - the children - who turned on the adults.
review 2: I picked up this book at Toronto Pierson International Airport and read it cover to cover on the flight back to the UK. The fact that I could not put it down for the whole flight is testament to the fantastic way it is written and skills of the Author.I am a sucker for a bit of witchcraft vs Christianity and a great deal of superstition and fascination with individual differences. For me this book brought attention to how people are categorized in society being either worshiped or persecuted and segregated because of their special talents. This book tells the story of a small child who has a special singing gift and whom is claimed by a local clergymen to do the work of God in a situation where most of the children in the village are taken in to their house of worship. There was a certain degree of "out of the mouths of children" going on within the plot line and this highlights their ongoing vulnerability and ease in which adults corrupt the minds of children for their own needs. On the whole it is a well thought out and developed piece of literature which is worthy of reading over and over and over again. less

Never really caught my attention. Her other book "The Virgin's tale" is more enjoyable.
