review 1: Amazing characters and story line. Decker has held onto his love for Lizz for more than a decade. He committed a crime to save her and willingly paid the price, but he's sure that he's too late and not good enough for her. Lizz has entered into a bad relationship with someone that treats her as "less" and holds onto it because she is afraid to be alone. I really liked that Decker struggled to stand on the sidelines if that was what made Lizz happy. He has given his all to Lizz even if she doesn't see the literal evidence in Deckers hands. I loved that he was finally willing to lay it all on the line for her. The backpack full of letters was perfection.Adult read
review 2: He should have moved on…Decker Calhoun spent seven years in jail. I loved Decker, he’s
... more a great character. I loved how he had no regrets from doing what he had done that landed him in jail. He saved someone he cared about and that’s all that mattered to him. He’s loyal to a fault but it was hard to understand why Decker loved Lizzie. Perhaps it was the Lizzie he knew before that he remained in love with for the Lizzie we are introduced to is not much of a woman.Elizabeth (Lizzie) Waters is a weak woman with no confidence in herself. She allows herself to be used as a doormat and makes very poor decisions. When her boyfriend asks for an open relationship she agrees to it. This reader does not like cheating and an open relationship is just that. It is hard to like a woman who would agree to this just to keep a man she is not in love with to have somebody in her life, that that someone degrades her wasn’t of importance to her. We do learn later on what happened to Lizzie that caused Decker to go to jail and it explains her issues but in all the years it is difficult to imagine that she would not have sought help to deal with the trauma of that night. She was also oblivious to the fact that her best friend that she loved was in love with her while everyone else could see it. Though she did get some gumption towards the end it was too late for this character to be redeemed for this reader. For all the years that he lost, Decker deserves a better woman.Though I normally love this author’s works this one is not a favorite. I had to force myself to finish reading. less
