review 1: This was the first book I had read by this author and all I can say is WOW!!! She is definitely going to be on my top list of authors now!Carly Jo Simon is her daddy’s princess. She has it all, wealth, a great family and the perfect boyfriend in Colton Weston. Of course, when things are going great, that’s when life has a way of throwing us a curve ball. That perfect boyfriend dumps her unexpectedly only to find out she’s pregnant the very next day. Her daddy basically chastises her for her lack of responsibility and refuses to help her. With no one to support or believe in her, she leaves the only life she’s know in the mountains of Kentucky and moves to the beaches of South Carolina, without a trace. For seven years, Carly Jo has been estranged from her fa... moremily. She went through a tragic event that causes her to miscarry the baby. She takes a series of jobs to provide for herself, but she’s happy with her life. Her sister, Savannah, calls her one day and informs her that their dad, Big John, is dying of cancer and only has days to live. Carly Jo knows she needs to make amends with him before it’s too late and rushes home. At the reading of her will, she receives a MAJOR shock, he has left his entire coal company to her and she’s been names as the new CEO. She was planning on returning to SC after the reading but now it appears she’s moving back to Kentucky. On the first day, at the very first meeting with the supervisors, she comes face to face with COLTON WESTON. JUST GREAT!Old passions reignite in them both and even though she doesn’t fully trust him, he’s trying to win her back. He has confessions to tell her and of course she has secrets too to come clean with. They begin a tumultuous relationship that is a constant struggle between them. They belong together, but they fight against one another. For every step he makes towards her, she backs up two steps from him.Luke is an old friend of Carly Jo’s. They reconnect and he becomes her confidant and best friend. He ‘gets her’ when no one else does, even Colton. Colton hates him for this. He shares his own secrets with Carly Jo and she is sympathetic to his situation. I love Luke, I want him to find his happiness! He has a HUGE part in the ending of this book. I can’t say what but just have book two ready! There are a ton of emotions you will experience while reading this story. I laughed at the silliness between the characters, screamed at their refusal to move past things and start over, and my heart broke for their unhappiness. They all carry pain in their hearts that no one is privy to. But they rise above their situations and begin to heal together.Of course, every great book has an aspect of angst and Covered In Coal definitely has its share. Carly Jo’s company and family is under attack. You always know who the bad guys are, but you don’t know the when and how they’ll attack. When will they get the closure they need to begin their HEA?Just be prepared for the last chapter! OMG, what a cliffhanger!
review 2: Covered in Coal is an excellent debut novel by Silla Webb! I knew going in that this book was going to leave me standing on the edge of a cliff. I had NO idea that Silla would be there to push me off that cliff at the end. So, here I am dangling from a mountain side with absolutely no idea what is going to happen next. I mean, talk about a WTH moment! I loved Carly Jo, she is strong and independent, yet she’s not so strong that she can’t be hurt. She holds it all in until she can’t take it any longer. I had mixed feelings about Colton in the beginning, but I have to admit I could feel his love for Carly Jo. Then there is Luke. Oh poor Luke, my heart broke for him but he needs to move along because Carly is Colton’s. (You take note of that Silla!!) I absolutely adored Heidi Jo. Silla did such an amazing job with this little girl that I could visualize her every action. I can’t wait to see what this little sassy princess does in book two.
