review 1: This book is a dystopian novel set in the distant future in Los Angeles City Center. The heroine Ava Rhodes lives in City Center, she is the candidate for the Queen, and first believes that what city leaders say. When she meets a rebel Joseph from the Outside world, and he reveals to Ava the true face of City Center, past and possible future, she decides to run away and start a journey through outside. During the journey she reveals yet another lies and becomes closer with Joseph. The book plays with opposites - City Center versus Outside, technology versus agriculture, perfection versus imperfection, painful truth versus white lie, actual actions versus external impression, and of course the prison with bars versus a prison in which we are part voluntarily. The book has a... more very interesting plot, so you definitely want to read the sequel, but I missed more elaborate characters. Actually something more we learn just about Ava and a few others, while the world in the book is much more sophisticated. Also, the language in the book seemed to me in some places a little simple, and this surprisingly causes confusion on the part of the reader. Where there was more elaborate text I also felt more confident in the course of the story, and it is easier to read. This book I can definitely recommend to all the readers who love not-so-classic dystopian novels, and I think that the next book in the serie will only get better.---I received a copy of this book from author in exchange for honest review.---
review 2: “The City Center” by Simone Pond is an intriguing dystopian novel that brings the story about our world three hundred years in the future where little had remained from the present time.Due to the apocalypse caused by humans in the 21st century, majority of the Earth population was killed – the remaining people were divided into two groups, one which remained living in City Center in the Kingdom of Los Angeles, and rebels who are forced to live Outside.Three hundred years had passed since and reader is introduced to main character named Ava Rhodes who is one of the several potential Queen of the City Center successors.Just before the final competition will start, Ava will meet Joseph, a rebel from the Outside world, discovering the real nature of her home which is actually a breeding facility for perfect human creation. Ava will escape with Joseph to the Outside world, and while chase will start after her, Ava will slowly learn about some disturbing events from the human history.Soon besides trying to save her bare life, Ava will need to decide whether she wants to fight against such world in which she grew up…“The City Center” is author’s first novel and still she managed to write a piece that is a real page turner and will definitely appeal to those who love dystopias and apocalyptic stories about the future of our beloved planet Earth. She created her novel using intriguing premise that can be compared to some cult novels which cover human’s not so bright future like Logan's Run and Brave New World. Also, in some aspects its story resembles the one from The Hunger Games - people are living in the “perfect” world inside, while the rest of the world full of disease and radiation is ruled by wicked people. At least in the stories who supposedly want the best for the people…On the other hand, what is the best feature of the novel is its unpredictability and avoiding the clichés that are common in the literature – instead Pond succeeds to surprise and sometimes shock the reader with the direction in which the action will move. For this reason I hope that the author will have the inspiration to write a sequel on the same level of quality and interest, because with her first SF story she lifted criteria high. less
