review 1: This is more like a 2.5 stars. It was ok. I had high hopes for this book, but it offered very few twists and turns in the ghost story. I was just looking for more. The story was fine and I rather liked some of the characters, but you never get the feeling that any of them are really in danger (influenza is more lethal than the ghosts). There were many characters and it was hard to keep the men in the institution straight, especially when in one paragraph they were referred to by their last name and the next by their first. It ended tidily, which was another disappointment. review 2: This book was a page turner and I couldn't put it down. However, by the time I got to the last several chapters, I couldn't wait to be finished with it. There was a slow build... more up and then a frenzy of activity that was confusing and too neatly packaged. The last few chapters were not well written and seemed to be an entirely different pace of writing. There were so many plots that needed to be resolved that it was quite a disappointment. less
