review 1: The cover quote..."A delightful mash-up of Jane Austen and The Rules, this modern guide to romance is pure stout-hearted charm.' -Amy Dickinson, 'Ask Amy' advice columnist and NPR contributor. I saw this book on the new book section of a local library I use. I decided to take it out on a whim. I must admit I wasn't expecting much...I thought it would be the Rules adapted to Jane Austen. ***Rolls eyes***I remember a debate about The Rules at a year's eve weekend between "Mr. Elliot"(computer company robber baron...very rich and very conceited...his smile contained daggers, perhaps made worse by being bitter divorcee) vs my dear friends "Eleanor Tilney" and "Elizabeth Bennet". Eleanor and Elizabeth hated it, Mr Elliot defended it. To me, The Rules seemed like something out o... moref the 1950's...and it should have stayed there(although published in 1995)!!! The Jane Austen Rules is actually the anti-The Rules. The Rules say be silent at certain points....The Jane Austen Rules says be bold!(maybe Charlotte Lucas wasn't wrong about everything). Yes....Team Marianne approves this message! I'm not sure about all the advice in the book, but of course I'm not in the target market. However, the Jane Austen quotes and items used are worth the price of admission...as another Goodreads review mentioned. I was amused by the last chapter title..."Reader, Marry Him!". While I don't care a fig for the Three Twisted English Sisters, great use of the line. Lol, (TMI warning) Eleanor and Elizabeth's new boyfriends arrived at the long weekend a few days later. They did, in fact, marry them(Elizabeth's husband is Mr. Bingley, not sure about Eleanor's husband). Mr. Elliot remarried a few years later. Mr. Elliot's 2nd marriage was to a Lady Middleton type. 'Nuff said!!!!
review 2: Practical, sane, smart advice with examples both of the wisdom of following it and of the pitfalls of going some other way from the novels of the inimitable Jane Austen. Has both convinced me that I have been going about relationships mostly the right way, that I have room to improve and that I really must finish Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion. Recommended for both solid advice and for those who want a quick Jane Austen fix. less
