review 1: The issues I had with it are somewhat redeemed by the end, which introduces an emotional presence to the reading of Harry's life and life's work. It's a very intelligent book and brilliantly done; I think the perspective, the multiple layers of story and personality overlaying it, piled on to obscure an emotional core. The end starts to lay it bare, but my preference would have been for the passion to have had more presence throughout.
review 2: Postmodernism, gender, and decadent art world of NYC. What was not to like about the premises? Too bad they've been cooked in a thick sauce of psychoanalysis, pretense, and endless oh-so-clever references. Beneath artful writing, this book is dry and boring, a display of Hustvedt's erudition. Sure, impressive, but I did
... moren't ask for a guided tour in case I got lost in intertextual hints. Also the fact that Hustvedt calls herself a "neuropsychoanalyst" should be put on the cover as a warning. You know, if someone would prefer to avoid the bullshit. less
