review 1: I can't help it. Zizek infuriates me. And I like it. This book is really readable for those of us who are more comfortable with the jargon of political economy than the jargon of psychoanalysis (there's a bit about the Big Other -- which I actually found useful -- but otherwise Lacan keeps quiet). The downside to reading this book is that you'll want to talk about it, and then you have to begin conversations with "So Zizek says . . ." -- and you must then navigate the minefield of how people already feel about Comrade Slavoj.
review 2: Of the maybe 10 Zizek books I've read, this is probably the most directly political. Unlike many of his other works I've read, which re-theorize ideology or present Lacanian principles via film studies, First as Tragedy engages di
... morerectly with political economics and cultural politics. The first half of the book is particularly interesting to me because in that section Zizek examines the ideology and practices of neoliberal political economics, which I am going to write about in my dissertation. Zizek's take on neoliberalism combines Marxist political economics with Lacanian psychoanalysis and postmodernism, to read the ways in which global capital motivates sub-groups of the (new, expanded) proletariat to misrecognize their real class enemy--the system of big, global capital--and instead focus their attention of divisions of identity--race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. less

I love Salvoj Zizek but it would be irrational to rate this book very highly!
