review 1: 4.5 STARSReceived a complimentary copy from the author for an honest review. I had seen this book on a lot of posts from different blogs and I loved the cover, but never 1 clicked ONLY because every time I came across it, I had just bought more books that I didn't need! These are stories of BDSM, so if anyone is not comfortable with this, don't read. But if can give this a chance, it's a wonderful story. This is book 2 in the Isthmus Alliance series. Book 1 Unexpected AngelBook 1 is about Dylan & Tasha.Book 2 is about Tommy & HollyThis is a story of Tommy seeing past Holly's struggles with addiction to drugs & alcohol. He is willing to go against what all his close friends/family believe to give Holly this chance when nobody else has in the past including her own parents... more. One night of desperation from Holly lands her in the hospital and inpatient rehab after being released. Also she's facing criminal charges as well.Tommy Reed is a local cop who has been struggling with the meaning of his job, for which he has wanted since he was 8 years old. Tommy comes from a very loving family. But has a tragedy of his own that shaped him early in life. The events from the night Holly was injured and put in a coma by the hands of Tasha's ex-husband Nick Romero will change him forever. Tommy was put on administrative leave from the shooting that night and with Holly being released from in patient rehab, Tommy was asked by Holly's friend Tasha to help put Holly up so she won't go back to her old ways. Holly has been the "wild" friend of Tasha's for the last 20 years. Polar opposite in every way. Tasha's family welcomed Holly into the family for which Holly has always appreciated, since she really didn't have very loving/caring parents. Holly was there for Tasha when she decided to divorce her husband, Nick Romero. So here is a story of a nice guy trying to help a girl (who he knows is capable of being nice) come back from the darkness that sucked her in. Even though he has felt something for Holly since she was in the hospital, he tries to just bring out the feisty, charismatic person he sees in her. During this time, Holly finds a lot about giving yourself up to someone else doesn't mean you have lost control of yourself. And some pain can lead to pleasure in the hands of the right man.I LOVED this story. I so want my own Tommy Reed!!! I could so see giving myself up to a man like this 100%! And for Holly, I felt her sense of having no self worth and how could anyone LOVE her??? And if she gives herself to this man, one day Tommy is going to realize this and leave her. They complement each other wonderfully. I can't wait to read #3, Unexpected Consequences. This is the story of Zeke (Tommy's cousin) Jeff (Holly's therapist at one time) & Mary (Holly's attorney at one time). This description alone of these 3 people is enough to want to read!!!!!!!!!!Great job Sloan Johnson!!!
review 2: I greatly enjoyed Unexpected Protector. I loved Unexpected Angel, and couldn't wait to sink my teeth into this story. It really delivered!It was not a typical love story. Tommy was a cop, who had warned his friends that Holly was bad news. Holly was an addict who was hitting rock bottom. Then he finds her in a puddle of her own blood and sees red. After that he holds vigil at her side while she is in a drug-induced coma recovering from her injuries and detoxing. I've got to be honest, I kinda thought that he was a creepy stalker at first, but I quickly understood what he was feeling and knew that it wasn't like that for him. He just felt compelled to make sure that she was going to be okay.Holly, while feeling a connection to Tommy, seems to really want to hate him and when she has nowhere else to go only moves into his basement under duress. Eventually he begins to break through the walls of self-loathing that she has constructed and their relationship grows beyond mere friendship.It was quite beautiful to see how, with Tommy's help, Holly was able to begin to forgive herself and see that she is more than the choices of her past. I loved that he was so patient and kind with her. He was completely selfless when it came to making her better. Add to that just how incredibly sexy and dominate he was and he may be the perfect man.Unexpected Protector delves into the world of BDSM, not graphically and not far, but it is there. I greatly enjoyed this aspect of this book especially in the ways that it helped Holly learn more about who she actually is without the substances she had so heavily relied on.The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that it ended with a GIGANTIC cliffhanger. It was huge and it left every relationship in the book hanging. ARGH! I hated it! I need book three NOW! less
