review 1: This was an almost painful read for me. What if Romeo and Juliet had been tricked and were mere pawns in an immortal game of good and evil? What it their deaths had been planned so that their two exception souls could be used as foot soldiers on opposite sides of the war? And what if their true loves weren't each other but different people entirely? Romeo Montague has traveled forward thousands of years in time to be with a young, troubled woman named Ariel. It is his mission to convince Ariel of true love but he has only three days to do it. Does Romeo have the skills to convince Ariel he is all she has ever dreamed of? And just why is it that in this battle of hearts he has the feeling he will wind up being the loser?Ariel seemed mentally unstable to me. I couldn't like ... moreher and the girl the book described as sweet and savage was only savage to me. My dislike of Ariel made me less than interested in the romance and the battle between good and evil seemed a bit of a misnomer since both sides seemed equally bent.
review 2: After the mixed feelings I had for Juliet Immortal, I picked up its sequel, Romeo Redeemed not entirely sure of what I was walking into. I liked the first book quite a bit—Juliet was a surprisingly strong, proactive character, and I enjoyed Jay’s prose. In the sequel, however, things didn’t work out nearly as well.In Romeo Redeemed, the entire premise is that Romeo has to make a girl fall in love with him in less than three days so that his soul can be saved. I’m not at all sorry to say that I don’t believe two teenagers should commit to forever with each other after three days. So far, both of the books I’ve read by Stacey Jay have not only incorporated instalove into their plots, but flaunted it. Instant attraction, infatuation, whatever you call it—that’s totally understandable. But do you really want to get engaged to someone after three days? What if they turn out to have issues you can’t deal with like a criminal record, a live-in mother, a mental illness that puts you and your love interest in danger, or, or… Ugh.Of course, none of that was a big change from Juliet Immortal, but while I should have been expecting it, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t annoyed (and rightfully so).Instalove aside, I was still hoping that Jay would once again deliver strong characters and engrossing prose. Sadly, that wasn’t the case.Romeo, being the “dark one” in the Romeo/Juliet relationship was extremely, extremely angsty. Being inside his head was like listening to a My Chemical Romance song on repeat for 72 hours straight. Such angst and excessive emotion. Ariel, Romeo’s love interest, did nothing for me either. She was also very angsty, but not in the eye-roll inducing way Romeo was. Instead, Ariel was just…boring.Jay’s prose wasn’t as stunning as it was in the first book either. It was still effective and conveyed the right messages, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d anticipated. Like the characters, I was pretty disappointed with the style of writing in Romeo Redeemed. The paranormal elements in this book were still fairly good, though. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a Dark vs. Light showdown couched in quite the same style as Stacey Jay accomplishes here. I’m also a big fan of things where it turns out that the good guys are bad and vice versa. I did have problems, though with the time travel + multiple realities combination that Jay attempted. I like to think I’m not an easily confused person, but most of the second half of Romeo Redeemed had me confused, especially since it doesn’t match up with the end of Juliet Immortal at all. Some things about this book still have me scratching my head.Altogether I feel pretty “meh” toward this book. It was decent but nothing to write home about. As a follow up, I guess this was good and on par for the course established in Juliet Immortal. But when all’s considered, I’m not a huge fan of Romeo Redeemed. less
