review 1: i picked this book to read this week because it is set in modern London and it was fun to be there while i read it. this is the first of a intended series, so a lot of time and effort is spent in setting the backstories of the important characters who will carry the story line, but this storytelling is well integrated into the story of this book which focuses on the atrocities that have occurred in Uganda for the last 25 years and their ripples into the present. i really enjoyed the author's style of story telling, but i felt like a was reading a debut novel since it seemed like his use of words was not very consistent...turns out he has many published works, so i guess this is what it is. so, in the end i enjoyed the mystery and the story, but found the writing to b... moree less then great. not sure if i would read another from this author.
review 2: I'm not sure how to classify this book. The theme of African tribal brutality almost overrides the rest of the novel. With the morose main characters, the incessant rain and the overdone coffee drinking, it seemed at times like I was reading a Scandinavian mystery. The detailed descriptions of hacked body parts could fit into a horror genre. There is mystery and police work, to be sure, and the plot's not bad at all, so I give it three stars. But I probably won't read more books by this author. Too depressing. less
