review 1: It'll put you in Monet's world, filled with passion for his painting and his fellow artists and passion for Camille! The Impressionists, as theycame to be called, forged a new path in art- but, it was a difficult journey, meeting resistance from classical painters of that era. It took much perseverance and enduring hand-to-mouth existence to reach their goals. Many did not see fruition of their work; others, including Monet, found artistic recognition in their later years. I admired Monet's talent, but came to loathe his disregard for people's feeling and his self-centered ways. His friends took this in stride, whileCamille suffered from Monet's extremes in behavior. It was enjoyable to get a glimpse of famous works of art, as they were being created; and I'll see them wi... moreth new eye " next time."
review 2: This was a wonderful read. I so enjoyed learning about the burgeoning Impressionist community in Paris at the turn of the century. Still, I was a bit taken aback to learn that one of the major conflicts in this book was completely fictionalized (Hard to expound upon that without including spoilers.) I also felt that this historical novel seemed to ebb and flow, in the sense that there were parts that were slow and at times, even tedious, interspersed with parts that were riveting and simply unforgettable. Stick with it! You won't be disappointed. This is a hauntingly beautiful novel, one you will not soon forget. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction novels, or is interested in art history. less
