review 1: Loved it! I've read historical fiction before where Julia is depicted as catty and I liked that in this book she was Selene's best friend. She was superficial but I'm glad that there was limited girl drama between them. Also, I liked her depiction of several of the other main characters. This was a fast read but I do wish that she had left out the magical aspects. I think that Selene's story is very intriguing without adding the mystical and fake. Entertaining read!
review 2: I could only imagine the sadness and terror Selene really felt when she realized her mother was going to kill herself. This book portrays it all so well, and nothing is all "this-battle-happened-and-this-king-married-this-lady" in a couple of sentences like in some historical fiction. It i... mores written through the eyes of a ten-year-old girl who is taken from her home, bound in chains, paraded through the streets with stones hurled at her, and brought up in the court of vicious Romans. I love Helios for his hot-headedness and Philadelphos was adorable. Loved Lily of the Nile. less
