Cleopatra's Daughter
review 1: I label this paranormal because of the goings-on in the book - Isis speaking to Selene through bloody hieroglyphics, Selene controlling the wind and taming wild animals... I know the author took that creative liberty so I'm good with that. I enjoyed the fact that she stuck closely to the accurate history of Selene, Octavian, and Cleopatra. Reading other reviews, I found it interesting that some people thought Selene was annoying and whiny. I would disagree, she did what she had to do to survive, especially with the lowered opinion of women in Roman society. She learned from the "best" - the man who ran Rome while controlling all his "puppets," if you will. I'm interested in the rest of her story!
review 2: Ok, let me start out by saying I simply adored this
... morebook. From the beginning it starts off strong and dramatic. The whole premise of the book is that Cleopatra's daughter, Selene, gets taken away from Egypt and basically enslaved in Rome. She starts off as this young, spoiled little brat. She had spent her whole childhood as a princess, adored and honored as a child of Isis. When her mom dies, Egypt is left in ruins without a ruler. The Roman emperor is a slimy, manipulative man who seeks to use Selene and her twin brother in any way possible to further advance his "kingdom". He is such an annoying character! I found myself wanting to reach through the pages of the book and slap the crap out of him. He completely puts down women as rulers, which is why he hated Cleopatra. He wants Selene to be this docile little girl who never questions a mans authority, and just does what she is told. Selene knows she is destined for a greater purpose, her brothers and her were all blessed with gifts from Isis. You see a lot of her spiritual journey in this book as well as her maturing into a young adult. The middle of this book had me slightly bored though, I got sick of the daily life and routine of her doing absolutely nothing in Rome. Just as it started strong, it finishes strong as well and completely makes up for the some what tedious middle portion. This book is such a fantastically written blend of historical fiction and magic. I'm hoping in the second book we see more of her inner badass female that embraces her gifts from Isis. Own it girl. less
