review 1: **Spoilers present in this review**Parts of this book feel very authentic. The author has a firm grasp of the lifestyle and toxic nature of upper-socio-economic life in Mobile, AL. Even in a place as backwards as Mobile, though, a mother this level of abusive wouldn't have been allowed to go on THIS long before someone would have noticed and intervened. Especially not where those upper crust kids are involved. The love triangle was, unfortunately, unbelievable as well. Not because of its messiness--teenage sex lives tend to get that messy--but because of how neatly it resolved. The mental illness subplot not even starting until 3/4 of the way through the book is a real problem, especially considering how quickly it gets resolved, too. There was a lot of potential, here, an... mored Lawton has done an amazing job understanding Mobile for being someone not born into that giant cesspool of a town, but it just has too many parts that don't add up to hold together. I think that Lawton's work will get better over time, but this novel is one to avoid.
review 2: Okay what the hell did I just read? And WHY did I just read it?First of all, I downloaded this book ages ago. It was cheap and sounded interesting so I skipped the sample. Rookie mistake. The premise for this novel and what this novel actually is about are not really the same thing. I thought I was going into a naughty student/piano teacher relationship. Instead I got Mother/Daughter abuse with a side of angsty damn-near-30-year-old-man with a touch of 'good guy willing to take 17 year old sloppy seconds.' NOT that there's anything wrong with that. In fact, it held my interest enough for me to finish it.But with that said, this felt like the author's first novel. There was zero character building, introduction, or even a bit of scene setting. Readers are damn near thrown into the lives of these people and the first chapter covers what most books take entire quarters to get through. Eventually the pacing slows down, like... waaaaay down. And then it accelerates again and we're at the end. I don't know what it was that motivated me to finish this one, and I'm not sure I'm glad that I did. less
