review 1: Half historical fiction, which might appeal to those interested in sexual politics, retail practices, and architecture of early-1900s New York City, with interesting female characters (though a thoroughly modern voice). The other half a modern story that would appeal to those who like one-step-heavier-than-chick-lit, vintage fashion, and early-2000s New York City. Not sure if those are the same reader, and the while the different stories kept me interested, the switching back and forth was sometimes abrupt and jarring. A wealth of time-period detail (sometimes rather pedantically relayed...though obviously very well-researched) in the history bits. A big, weirdly-presented reveal at the end & an almost-supernatural tying of the two stories together makes for an odd final a... morect. Suspend your disbelief to enjoy the stories of these women. Not quite sure how this gets a cover blurb from Hosseini....though this author attempts to be as affecting as his works, she has some polishing work to do.
review 2: This the story of two women, Olive and Amanda. Olive lived in 1907 New York and her story is revealed through her journal. Her journal is found by Amanda, living in 2007 New York and owner of a vintage clothing store. The author does a masterful job of connecting the lives of these two women and painting a historical portrait of the city they love. The stories of each could stand alone but together they blend and enhance each other, showing how far women have evolved and yet how often we are the same. I usually don't like reading stories that jump from one character or scenario to another but this was seamless. less

I really enjoyed this book. It's not too long and I found it to be a pretty easy read.
