review 1: This is the first book in the Tommy Carmellini series I have read, you don't need to know who he is to get into the story so don't be put off by the #5 in the series it stands alone and there's enough character back story to bring you up to speed. I definitely felt the beginning half of the book with the taking of the cruise liner was the best part and most intense. Towards the end with all the sneaking around, spying and military action some just felt long winded and drawn out (just my opinion). Overall though it was a good book that took a piece out of real world events and crafted a fictional story with it as a base. I know I won't be going on a cruise anytime soon though.
review 2: Stephen Coonts has over the course his more than dozen quasi-military thrill
... moreers, developed two very strong characters, Tommy (the smart ass) Carmellini and Admiral Jake Grafton. These are solid and interesting men who Mr. Coonts uses very well in establishing a base that is not just story driven but character driven as well. The story in not a new one, Somali pirates hijack a cruise ship and hold it for ransom. Can they be saved? Will the ice cream on board freeze, will Islamic terrorists take over the role as hijackers? Lots of good stuff. As a veteran of many cruise adventures this is one I would just as soon miss. Remind me never to take the leg around the Horn of Africa where the action takes place. I for one think that arming Princess Cruise Lines with 50 caliber machine guns IS a good idea. Fast and enjoyable Mr. Coonts again shows he can bust out a good story. Couple of things to watch for, he jumps back and forth form first person to third depending on characters, not bad but this bothers some readers, cruising is not for the faint of heart, and lastly the "Alley" in the title is nowhere to be found in the book. I suggest maybe PIRATE DESERT or some thing else. less
