review 1: I read this book in two days. It is a moving story, similar in many ways to "The Reluctant Fundamentalist". I found myself thinking of the main character when I was away from the book. Both sad and beautiful, I enjoyed the writing style and thought the italics helped to separate which character was speaking . I enjoyed the look at American culture from an outsiders perspective and can relate to how overwhelming it can feel to move there. Also interesting to reread quickly after you have finished to see how everything in the early parts of the story fit into the "real" story. Looking forward to discussing this in our book group.
review 2: The writing in this book was fantastic. The underlying message was....interesting. The lion and gazelle (I think that'
... mores what it was) on the front are meaningful and represent (I suppose Dau's feelings) that America means well but in the end we do more harm than good in the Middle East. This is a fictional story about a boy that comes from 'somewhere' over there. His life was saved by an American soldier that went AWOL because he began questioning orders. The book was not pro-Christian and I'm not sure whether it was pro-American or not, but I would read another book by Dau anyday. Did I mention fantastic writing? less
