review 1: Since I can't read the books that DFW wrote, I decided to read ABOUT him. And, I will re-read this book because it is chock full of fabulous literary conversation. Interviewers, especially the guy from CONTEMPORARY LITERARY REVIEW, were prepared for him and he did not let them down. All said, my background is not rich enough in comparative literature nor the gift of discourse to really keep up. Modern literary conventions are matched with historical literary trends that come from the advantage of having a classical education. Inventing a new genre (if that's the right word) and the labor of this hard work run rife in Wallace's attempt to reveal his style, and the conversations are dense and intellectual. If Wallace did not come off as such a nice guy in so many of th... moree things I have read about him (not including this book) I would think him a smart ass and not just smart. His concept, as I read it, of who gets it and who doesn't, pissed me off. Something to do with irony and how irony can be used to beat people over the head seemed so self-satisfied. But, the suffering that he went through as a person and his multi-layered self introspection is a basic undercurrent in these serious revelations and a normal person can't help but cut him a break... Asshole that he is. Wallace chewed tobacco and notice of his spittoons came up in several of these interviews as well in other biographical sketches. If he hadn't killed himself he might be having a hard time coping with throat, tongue, mouth or some other kind of cancer right now. Wallace went to church in every city he lived in and had an enormous affection for his dogs. He was crazy about his family. He derided writing programs... getting an MFA in Creative Writing... as grist mills. I wish I could figure it out.
