review 2: I don't get the point of this book. The introduction is sludgy academic-ese that adds very little to what one can discern from DFW's writings.A lot of the Q&As included are incredibly lightweight--some hardly interviews at all. These are not only repetitive,
... morethe same anecdotes recurring again and again and again, but misleading. DFW was very self-conscious, but it's wrong to call him shy, as these interviews say ad nauseum.Only three interviews stand out, 'Looking for a Garde of Which to be Avant'; 'The Connection'; and 'An Expanded Interview with David Foster Wallace'--which is head and shoulders the best in the book, and maybe the whole reason to buy the book.DFW talks on a lot of familiar subjects, his constant battle between the nihilistic irony of (some) postmodernism and his urge for earnestness that is real and not maudlin; his urge to in some sense bridge experimental fiction with more popular entertainments; the need to look at things that are around us but ignored (TV, boredom). The finalessay by Mark Lipsky is excellent, and also an advertisement* for his much superior study of DFW--based on interviews--"Of Course, You End Up Becoming Yourself."Two stars only because in many places DFW's voice does come through well--otherwise it would be one.* I also cannot figure why the book insists on spelling advertisement as advertizement. less

Lit-light. Conversations that reveal the craft, or his thinking about the craft of writing.
