review 1: Some books grab you from the opening line. "Braineater Jones" begins with an instant classic: "I woke up dead this morning." Written with a great feel for 1930s-'40s pulp fiction a la Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, this book comes with a fun twist: the detective hero is undead and has to discover who killed him and why. The novel contains many indelible images, such as a zombie whorehouse where patrons can assemble their perfect woman by choosing each body part separately; Alcibe, the hero's best friend and sidekick, who is a disembodied head carried around in a birdcage; and the "Old Man," the longest-surviving member of the undead community who in a different way is also, as an aborted fetus, its youngest citizen. Kozeniewski artfully peppers the story with both hum... moreor and gruesome horror. The result is a hugely entertaining first novel that I highly recommend!
review 2: I'm not a zombie fan. I liked this book a LOT. It was smartly written, the mystery was compelling, but the real shine was in the characters. The baddies were bad and even the good guys weren't so good. The prohibition setting was perfect, and the slang had me laughing. It was impeccably researched and convincing. Jones is a helluva character, which is saying a lot because you literally get zero backstory. He doesn't remember it. It's quite a feat to build a whole character convincingly without being able to work in flashbacks, memories, previous experiences. But apparently, zombies have no memory of their life before death. Who knew? My favorite part was the a-la carte prostitutes. Kozeniewski has some imagination. Highly Recommend. less
