review 1: Library book, i would not have purchased this. It's an unusual story of a 19 year old boy who has custody of his 6 year old brother. Touching, realistic, honest -- right up to the point where it isn't. some completely implausible violence bits (slugs a man on the bus for no reason?), but the relationship between the brothers was great. Heavy with british references (tv, stars, food) so i had to invent/improvise a bit. A nice weekend read. I'm unlikely to remember this book long-term.
review 2: Billy Smith is 19, taking his "gap year" working at a social history museum. He lives with his mom and 6 year old brother, Oscar. His mother is killed in a bungled robbery. Billy and Oscar drift along, ignoring the casseroles and offers of help from friends and rumbles
... more of distress from Oscar's school and from social workers. When Oscar's dad shows up (he walked out before Oscar was born) to claim his son, Billy decides there is only one course of action. Funny and heart-breaking. less

The hapless protagonist is oddly compelling.
