review 1: As this series winds down, White returns to some paths of his earlier books. He plays small ball, which in this case means he focuses on aspects of Alan Gregory's clinical work. I much prefer when the focus is on the relationships and the drama and trauma that humans inflict on one another. The book is a fast read and is definitely elevated above the prior book. But I kept wanting to fast forward through the more tedious dialogue about the alleged rape. The dialogue is crisp and moves quickly. I think White wanted to really hammer home the point about justice being perverted by the wealthy, but there's nothing shocking about that. We're so cynical now, we believe that justice has been perverted for a long time.
review 2: Despite this being the 18th book
... morein the psychotherapist "Alan Gregory" series... it is the first read for me by author Stephen White. Overall I enjoyed "listening" to this novel but I have some complaints. I must agree with many other readers that he was a bit too heavy on the "heavy words" when he could have used words more conducive to the general public as well as the flow of the writing. Trying to impress the reader with a 'heavy vocabulary' only distracts from the novel even though I was familiar with those words. Despite that, however, I pretty much enjoyed the novel. It was slow moving at first but then picked up speed and I definitely wanted to know "who did it." Which was the goal from the start. My disappointment was having him introduce a new character toward the end of the novel but sometimes that's what you get. they usually do not like it when an author does this but, in this novel, I was okay with it. The other disappointment is a bit of a SPOILER ALERT so do not read from here if you do not want to know some of what happens at the end of the novel.I found it odd that a young boy would take pornographic pictures just because he was there on location/property of what happened, how it happened, and therefore "proved" who did what. It definitely clinched 'whodunnit' but I can't see that really happening. less

A little disappointing - too much description not enough action. Still, an author I'll come back to.

A murder/rape mystery that includes psychotherapy and a wonderful spin on the Kobe Bryant affair.
