review 1: Two friends who are comedy show scriptwriters undertake a gentlemanly challenge to race around the world without using airplanes. Steve's observations are deeper, and his appreciation for kitsch gives a zest to his account that Vali's lacks. Vali is more adept at describing his feelings at experiencing foreign cultures; his best moments are his one-man stand against Egyptian touts and hawkers and his description of being an Indian man traveling in Moscow. Sadly, one of them makes a decision with regard to the rules that I couldn't respect, so his accounts were suspect in my mind. The book has a pleasant "pick it up and read a few pages" quality to it that I appreciated. Nice to see a travel memoir that isn't ultra-stuffy and pretentious.

... morehe authors start the book with an over-the-top effort to be humorous, eventually they mellow out and stop trying so hard to be funny, and things get better. Overall, they try to seek out new adventures, and although most of the time those experiences are a bit self-serving, they can be enlightening.Still, the adventures and people they encounter are interesting - slumming in Brazil, getting hustled in Cairo, meeting long-lost family members in Italy - so, if you can get used to their slight smugness, it can be a fun trip. less
