review 1: Well, with a title like this, how can a writer resist? This was such fun. The satire on modern-day, traditional publishing, the fight between literary and genre fiction, the need for writers to be mediagenic, it was all deftly skewered here. There were several LOL scenes and narrative. For example..."Writing a novel--actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs--is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV's so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it's damn near impossible. ... Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit."Who can resist a voice like this?Yes, if you're going to read satire, it's better if you know the topic being satirized, ... morebut this is funny without knowing about writing and publishing. A solid rec.
review 2: Wow, I mean wow. I read this hilarious book in 2 days. I absolutely recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to write a book. Yes, it is pure snark but it is also hilariously and sadly true about the industry. Just like with music and Hollywood, it is not talent that gets you anywhere, it is who you know and if you know how to play the game. Sure, there are truly talented writers out there and they may be published, but those have tragically become the outliers. Most of it is farmed out BS touted by people who wrote one or two good books and then know how to turn it into a formula. So, for me the lesson goes, if you want to write a book, write it for yourself, but do not expect any success, unless you know someone in the industry or are spectacularly lucky.I have seen that Steve Hely has not written anything since this, which is sad, I think he is perceptive. It may be that the publishing industry did not like seeing the emperors clothes or he may just not want anything else to do with the publishing industry. less

Snarky and irreverent, and very entertaining. A sarcastic take on books and publishing today.
