review 1: This is an unbelievably comprehensive and beautiful book on animals of every kind, shape, and size. Steve Jenkins is brilliant and so talented. I got this copy from the library, but I will buy it the next time I'm at a book store. My students will LOVE it!! The cut- or torn-paper collages are stunning and the information is fascinating. There are timelines, facts galore, and even a book-making section in the back. A thorough glossary is included, too. I know a few kids who will spend lots of time pouring over the gorgeous, must-have book.
review 2: Jenkins creates books that transcend and defy "target reader" categories, offering finely balanced science, art, and language arranged on brilliant wide white spaces in ways that are both hypnotic and stimulat... moreing. This encyclopedic examination of the animal kingdom is organized in mind-friendly ways with visually familiar and appealing images, allowing both micro- and macro- insights to the world of animals, including us. The "24 Hour History of Life" was my favorite part until I turned a few pages further and discovered his "Making Books" pages. I approached this book thinking it was a brilliant way to repackage his past work in a comprehensive collection. It turned out to be that, but is so much more. This is a must have in every classroom and in family library. less
