review 1: A good short book focusing on the expositional preaching of John Calvin. It deals with both the preacher and the preaching. Good reminder of the nature of the pulpit and how preachers must themselves be pursuing God even in their preparations. The chapters focusing on the "how" of Calvin's preaching are useful, though some effort is necessary to think through what that would look like today. No one should try and preach exactly like Calvin (or any other preacher, for that matter). First in a series of books entitled "A Long Line of Godly Men Profiles"
review 2: Really can't say enough good about this short book. If you are a regular handler of God's Word in a public way this is a must read. If you haven't considered the importance of expository preaching i
... moret is a good primer through example. If you are convinced of the necessity of expository preaching it is a good kick in the pants to keep it up in the middle of a society that rejects the Word and in the middle of a wide church culture that assumes that a reformation type emphasis on Bible exposition just "won't work now." Dr. Lawson is not dispassionate about his explanation of Calvin's pulpit ministry. It is not a biography of Calvin (you won't find any negatives discussed) it is simply using the example of Calvin to exhort today's pastors and preachers to emulate the many good characteristics of his pulpit ministry. He weaves 32 "distinctive" marks of Calvin's pulpit ministry throughout the chapters of the book.1. Biblical Authority 2. Divine Presence 3. Pulpit Priority4. Sequential Exposition5. Diligent Mind6. Devoted Heart7. Relentless Will8. Direct Beginning 9. Extemporaneous Delivery 10. Scriptural Context 11. Stated Theme12. Specific Text13. Exegetical Precision14. Literal Interpretation 15. Cross-References16. Persuasive Reasoning 17. Reasonable Deductions18. Familiar Words19. Vivid Expressions20. Provocative Questions21. Simple Restatements 22. Limited Quotations23. Unspoken Outline24. Seamless Transitions25. Focused Intensity26. Pastoral Exhortation 27. Personal Examination28. Loving Rebuke29. Polemic Confrontation30. Succinct Summation 31. Pressing Appeal32. Climactic Prayer There is a very practical element to the book as he discusses Calvin's pulpit ministry not just from a philosophical standpoint, but also from a nuts and bolts standpoint. For example he discusses Calvin's introductions, substance, argumentation, demeanor, conclusions, prayer etc. of his preaching. In discussing these things he gives examples from the sermons of Calvin. It is a quick read and a page turner for someone who longs for nothing more than to be used by God to bring His Word to His people week in and week out. less
