review 1: This is an easy, short read. It does have a biographical quality to it, but I would not call it a biography. What Dr. Lawson does in this book is highlight Spurgeon's strong gospel focus in his preaching and throughout his ministry. The author also works to show how Charles Spurgeon's firm conviction in the sovereignty of God in salvation inflamed Mr. Spurgeon's evangelistic zeal rather than diminish it. I appreciate that Steve Lawson supported his claims about Spurgeon with frequent and often lengthy quotes from Charles Spurgeon himself. This is a great little book. I recommend it, and believe it will do two things for the reader; it will educate the reader on the priority of the gospel in Charles Spurgeon's ministry, and it will inspire the reader to be a bold proclaimer... more of the gospel.
review 2: "Charles Spurgeon, the great Baptist preacher of nineteenth-century London, is remembered today as “the prince of preachers.” However, the strength of Spurgeon’s ministry went far beyond simple rhetorical skill. In The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon, Steven J. Lawson shows that Spurgeon fearlessly taught the doctrines of grace and simultaneously held forth the free offer of salvation in Jesus Christ. In thirty-eight years as pastor of the congregation meeting at the New Park Street Chapel and later the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Spurgeon propounded Calvinistic theology with precision and clarity. Yet he always accompanied it with a passionate plea for sinners to come to Christ and be saved. Lawson traces these twin points of emphasis throughout Spurgeon’s long, fruitful ministry. The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon is a passionate call for all Christians to follow Spurgeon in maintaining the proper balance between divine sovereignty in salvation and fiery passion in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ." (From the Reformation Trust Publisher's Website)About the Author: Dr. Steven J. Lawson is the senior pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. He also serves as a teaching fellow of Ligonier Ministries; as a visiting professor at the Ligonier Academy of Biblical and Theological Studies; and as a member of the executive board of the Master’s Seminary. He is the author of seventeen books, including The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards and The Expository Genius of John Calvin, both in the Long Line of Godly Men Profiles series, as well as Pillars of Grace. He also has contributed numerous articles to journals and periodicals, and he is a frequent speaker at conferences. My Thoughts About the Book: For anyone who is a lover of all things “Spurgeon” The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon by Steven J. Lawson is a must read as the book details how “Spurgeon firmly held the sovereign grace of God in one hand and the free offer of the gospel in the other.” Dr. Spurgeon was able to balance the doctrine of the absolute Sovereignty of God with the Free Will of Man. Not an easy thing to do and this issue has been the cause of many a debate among theologians and evangelicals for centuries. And it is in the book we learn of Spurgeon’s unshakable commitment to the inerrancy and infallibility of the Word of God as well as his resolve to preach the gospel to any and to all with fervor and passion that would do us some good to hear from the pulpits of our churches across America today.Quoting pastors and Bible teachers such as Iain Murray, Dr. James Montgomery Boice and author Arnold Dallimore you get a clear picture of what the man and preacher Spurgeon was really all about…and that was doing the business of the Kingdom…which to him was living and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Author Lawson also freely quotes from Spurgeon’s messages so you get to know the man from his own words. And what powerful words they were and are. What I personally found to be neat about the book is that you get to catch a glimpse of the different sides of Spurgeon’s personality…that we was meek and humble yet extremely assertive; he was compassionate and passionate yet very authoritative. His reputation for being “The Prince of Preachers” is well deserved and this book about his Gospel Focused preaching is a well written and authentic revealing of both the man and power behind his Gospel Centered preaching.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received the book at no cost from Reformation Trust Publishers for review and promotional purposes. Good stuff but more about how Spurgeon illustrates Calvinism than about Spurgeon himself.
