review 1: I've read quite a few books in similar veins, i.e. regarding networks, information, and how they support innovation. Johnson has an interesting take, looking at several environments that support (or don't) innovation. His information is wide-ranging through history, technology, art, and science, and explores the history of innovation as something that occurs everywhere - just in greater quantity and quality under certain situations. I didn't agree with all his points, but definitely found some food for thought. A fast read and a definite recommend.
review 2: An eloquent explanation on the ingredients and methods of innovation and creativity with appeal to Darwinism. Johnson compares a reef, or habitat rich in biodiversity where organisms are dependent on each
... moreother. There is great risk and expense to change or do something new, but there is the rare occasion when a new method works to benefit many, this sticks. Sometimes that new idea is simply held up as an idea (a slow hunch) and never truly blossoms. We can all imagine a flying car, but there aren’t any out there, pragmatically this won’t work. While creating the flying car, you may stumble across a new rubber compound that can tolerate high temperatures (the accident). I particularly enjoyed reading about beavers and beaver dams, at a glance these seem like destructive animals but they create a completely new environment (new platforms). A beaver dam allows dragon flies to flourish and introduces new aquatic life. A songbird needn’t be limited to a abandoned woodpecker home, old trees from beavers can serve just as well. Nature has restored and even allowed new life to flourish even after tree life has been lost by the would be destructive beaver. Johnson confirms not a Harvard business school degree or a big corporation buying out a small company isn’t what sparks innovation. It is serendipity, when two forces unlikely to collide, make a new force. It was after all only carbon that made everything around us.Side Note: Reading this with Dawkins selfish gene were greatly complimentary. less
