review 1: An excellent look at the historical facts of religious freedom and how it influenced the early history of the United States. For example, I had no idea that the Boston Tea Party was caused by religious issues - the tax being protested was for building fancy homes for Anglican bishops in every parish, no matter what the predominant faith of the area was at the time. Thus the Puritans in Massachusetts would have had to pay to support Anglican bishops even though the official religion was Puritan/Congregationalist. In this time of politicians throwing around phrases about the religious freedom of our Constitution, it is refreshing to read about the religious freedom beliefs of some of the major political men of the time as facts instead of opinions about what we want the phra... morese to mean.
review 2: This was a very good book outlining the debate and history surround religious freedom in American and how that debate had been twisted in modern times by both the Left and Right. The author goes through the historical periods surrounding the Founding, Revolution and Constitution and shows the shifts during those periods and then does a biographical examination of the most prominent founders (Madison, Washington, Franklin, Jefferson) writings on religious freedom in America. less

Dry, a boring read with few unique or interesting insights. Not recommended.
