review 1: Not my thing at all. There's probably a way to tell a fantasy story I could appreciate about the conflict in Northern Ireland in the 70s, but for me, the styles and concerns of contemporary urban fantasy (including sort of hyperbolic characterizations, breezy or unrealistic dialogue, and cliché urbanization of folkloric creatures) just don't work for situations I strongly associate with complex social/political realities.
review 2: Interesting premise and enjoyable reading but I kind of got lost in all the various wars going on -- Christians and Catholics, Fallen and Fey, Catholics and Fallen, British and Irish and all the factions and abbreviations going on in between. I also have the same criticism that others -- 2/3 of the book could be wholly avoided if th... moree mom or the priest had actually told the main character who/what he was instead of watching him agonizingly find out alone. Also, a lot of the revealing information was in Gaelic without any translation given. less
