review 1: I love Sue Miller and have decided before I even begin one of her books that I will love it. I'm never anticipating any twists, turns, or over-dramatized plots... Just extremely well-written, fully developed characters that are so relate-able you have sympathy for them immediately. In The Lake Shore Limited, my feeling is the same however while the intertwined-stories of 4 characters are told from each their own point of view, I felt the book would have been stronger if just told from 3. Essentially the story is rooted in the triangle of the 3 and the fourth perspective is a bit of an outlier. His story is interesting, and honestly could warrant its own book. As if to confirm, this character ends up with fewer words devoted to his story. Still, I would recommend. It's an ... moreinteresting piece of how we manage the guilt of feeling what we truly feel vs how we should feel towards people we did once or are supposed to love.
review 2: The Lake Shore Limited by Sue Miller Book ReviewCarinya 22.05.2014I found this novel refreshing in its approach to the never ending search for true love. Emotional equality, although not an attribute necessary for maternal or filial devotion, seems mandatory to the success of long term romantic attachment.Effective communication is possible only if emotional equality exists. This point is highlighted by the doomed relationship of Billy and Gus. Billy perceives her live in lover Gus has the emotional maturity of a boy. She finds herself unable to deal with this gap in their levels of maturity and is biding her time to find the right time to say goodbye. Fate intervenes and the relationship ends, but not in the way she had envisaged and without the truth ever being spoken.I enjoyed the mix of joy and regret injected into this story of missed opportunity and ambiguous communication. less
