review 1: It's been a long time since I've read a book by Sue Miller. How I've missed her! Is there any better novelist at revealing the turmoils of human relations and the inner debates about their effects on the spirit? If so, I'm not sure who. Her touch is light but always affecting. In "The Lake Shore Limited" four stories are intertwined, brought together by a play of that name. Written by one of the protagonists, the play puts four people at odds as they wait to hear the fate of victims of a terrorist attack on a train pulling into Chicago, in which a wife (and mother) was aboard. That the playwright was the lover, and another of the book's protagonists the sister of a man who died in the attack on the Two Towers, makes this story of loss and redemption through art a deeply co... moremplex and satisfying read for those of us who love what I have come to categorize as a "domestic tragedy".
review 2: Great, loved Billy's story. Hated Billy. Too short of a novel by a superb author. I know it's tough teaching, but if Joyce Carol Oates can teach at Princeton , Sue Miller should definitely return to full time writing. Talent that great is a waste to write a post 9/11 book play.It seemed insipid. I also enjoyed Raffe and wished again this author would focus on writing more. As a fan, this novel next to The world Below and especially For Love was my least favorite by this author.Write Sue! less
