review 1: This felt more like a fantasy since I couldn't figure out the historical context of the storyline and the characters seemed a little too modern. This one went from a high intensity story about trying to save their world to an ending where the two characters decided to basically call it quits and run away together. That seemed like an abrupt transition. There was also some confusion on Hunter's abilities which seemed to be involve compelling animals to do things for him. Was he charming them to get them to do what he wanted or was he forcing his will on them? We needed clarification on it.All in all though, I wasn't offended as some were by the storyline as it all takes place in a fantastical world anyways. I found this a pleasant enough story.
review 2:... more> Mysterious, with historical/medieval overtones but with some interesting magic happening, this story is set in an unspecified past or a fantasy world, I am not sure which. One thing is sure: sodomy is illegal and whatever former power structure there was in the country/area the main characters are in, has been replaced with a vacuum and some sort of rebellion.Mouse, the childhood name for the narrator, given to him by the other main character, Hunter, has been caught spying and is almost hanged. During what he believes could be his last moments he realizes a few things and swears to act on them if he survives. But it isn't as easy as he thinks to make Hunter, his friend since they were seven, understand.Hunter has a connection to the earth and animals, and uses this forbidden sorcery to help both of them escape. He is hesitant about opening up to Mouse, but in the end, even he has to admit his feelings are stronger than he thought and their cause is most likely lost.If you like slightly mysterious stories, if you enjoy following a character's thoughts as he has a few epiphanies and acts on them, and if you're looking for a quick read with some suspense and a hopeful ending, then you will probably like this free short story. less

Didn't do anything for me. A little bland for my taste. Didn't connect with the characters.

Nice story. Feels like the beginning of a series. Very mushy and not a lot of backstory.
