review 1: The book was listed as "realistic fiction" and a top read in a few booklists. I found nothing about this realistic, to the point where every scene felt so contrived and campy as to be unreadable without accompanying cringe. But maybe I just don't understand the motivations of the humanities academy? I probably won't feel sorry for them next time I read a "the humanities are dying" doomsday piece, thanks to this book.
review 2: This book is about love. Young love, mad love, old married love, straight love, lesbian love, lost love, child love, impossible love, greedy love. Even a hint of dog love. The site of the first two thirds of the book was personally resonant, taking place in a university literature department 1993 when I myself, like the narrator, wa... mores irritated by Lacan and Derrida and longed for something real. The narrator is at times annoying, the other characters are really interesting, and there isn't really a plot. But still, it's about love (and sex), and what's more interesting than that. less
