review 1: The book was listed as "realistic fiction" and a top read in a few booklists. I found nothing about this realistic, to the point where every scene felt so contrived and campy as to be unreadable without accompanying cringe. But maybe I just don't understand the motivations of the humanities academy? I probably won't feel sorry for them next time I read a "the humanities are dying" doomsday piece, thanks to this book.

... mores irritated by Lacan and Derrida and longed for something real. The narrator is at times annoying, the other characters are really interesting, and there isn't really a plot. But still, it's about love (and sex), and what's more interesting than that. less
