I have been neglecting my blog for a few weeks- went on a short trip to Nashville and had some action on the job front. But I’m back and summer is officially here! Below are some book recommendations, perfect for the beach or wherever you find yourself reading this summer.
Umami
by Laia Jufresa
This refreshing story examines heartache and love within a small community in Mexico City. Beautifully written with some subtle truths about life, food, and family, this is a quick beach read. Book descriptions always sound so hollow but just trust me- it’s a great read!
Homegoing
by Yaa Gyasi
Another international perspective, Homegoing is one of the most honest and balanced books that I have read about slavery. The book follows two sisters born 300 years ago in Ghana. Thank goodness for the family tree in the front. Each chapter is devoted to a character in the sisters’ lineage, but the story seams seamless. It made me think about race but also power struggles, personal identity, and gender dynamics.
The Singer’s Gun
by Emily St. John Mandel
I just started this audiobook and to be honest, I’m not sure what is going on. Usually when I start a book (or watch a movie), I like to go in a little blind, so I have not read the description of this one. I loved Mandel’s last book (Station Eleven) so I decided to give this one a try and so far I am intrigued.
Another book series that I have been enjoying (both reading and watching the series on Acorn TV) is the Vera Stanhope series by Ann Cleeves. The narrator of the audiobook, Janine Birkett, is fantastic and although the characters are altered a bit for the big screen (Vera is a little more manic, her sidekick Joe is much younger)- both versions are very entertaining.
