review 1: I didn't love this as much as others seemed to - which is unusual since I grew up in the South in the era in which Starla and Eula were traveling and since I love a good Southern read. The plot seemed a little threadbare and like something I've heard before, and some of the scenarios presented just flat would not likely have taken place in the 1960s South. That said, I enjoyed the writing overall and, for the most part, the story, implausible as it was.
review 2: When Starla runs away from her grandmother's unhappy home in 1963, she had no idea how much one choice could change her life. Bonding with a young black woman, Starla and Eula form a friendship that not only saves their lives but helps them heal the wounds of their pasts. This is a wonderfully writte
... moren story about two people who come together in their time of need. The time period and history woven into the tale is quite well done. I really enjoyed this book. less
