review 1: Not a fan of self books but after recently having to take a rather drastic action with my mother, I grabbed this book to work through the feelings I was having. The book was much better that I had anticipated. Yes there are there archetypes but that comes with the territory with self help books. I pieced together from them what I needed. The stories from the real women helped me not alone. In addition, I was also found a way to allow myself to feel that maybe it wasn't all me. I'll never do the do the exercises (not my thing) but it did help to see how other work the same things I have to work through. She gives three different options for working through relationships with one's mother, and while mine is the most drastic option, she helped me to see that it was a fair and... more valid opton.
review 2: Perhaps because I am a marriage and family therapist and have studied behaviors and familial relationships, but this book seemed quite basic for me. This book has great points that would be great for a layperson, those new to the counseling field (as an added resource), and for those wanting to understand the underlying issues with mothers. While this book is more of a self-help type genre, this book will certainly be helpful for others. less

Excellent! I especially enjoyed the chapters on non-defensive communication and setting boundaries.
