review 1: This story is not for the faint of heart. It deals with a sad reality- child abuse, however the writer intertwines her life with the events of the Ottilie's life very well. If you have been through a similar situation you find it harsh and yet so real, and true. I also enjoyed the fact that the love of a child was highlighted vs the love of a man.... which is a reality and refreshing to read. Amazing story.
review 2: No matter how horrible and interesting in the beginning, the book got too garrulous and pointless with too many details that are of no use for the plot or characters. I wonder where Ms. Lewis' editor has been. The heroine is in a constant state of 'loving' someone for doing something, they all stubbornly use word 'obviously', everything and everyon
... moree is 'at large'. There are broken ends everywhere as well as collegues lacking qualification, danders and incongruities. But what made me nervous at the most, is the "I" narration behind the drawn curtains where there are mentions of the police outside, of her mother coming soon, of the laywer but none of the girl hidden upstairs. Could she not acknowledge her presence to herself at that point? And what about the laywer? Did Ms. Lewis realise halfway that he's nothing close to Mark Darcy and would not be helping out? There are too many 'and what about', so I won't even start. No, there was more. In the interview of this edition the author mentioned that the Ottilie line is purely thought out. So be it. Don't take it too seriously. Don't let it get into your nightmares. less

A very nice story. And yet depressing at time. Esp when it involves Ottilie.

Overall I liked this book but the ending could have been more realistic.
