review 1: Like others, I had to wonder if this kind of dark and sexual material was really YA. I had to think. And I decided--yes, of course. Teens are surrounded by dark sexual material, from the nightly news to HBO. And many teens experience an involuntary dark sexuality in their own lives. This YA novel is literature, not for every reader, not for every teen, but literature in the care taken in the writing and in the complexity of the characters and story. This is a story meant to inform and enrich and even redeem or heal. And the darkness and the sexuality both were simply part of the book's world, that time, that place, not gratuitous.
review 2: I listened to the audiobook but I have seen the hardback book of this and it's simply gorgeous. The narrator of the audio ... moredidn't read the book she performed it, really amazing. Now as far as the story is concerned, a little crazy, I wouldn't want to live in this kingdom and I spent a lot of my time saying ewww and what? because of things that happen. The majority of the book is told through two girls POV's, both of them hired help that live in the castle. This book is not for the faint of heart. It deals with childbirth, dismemberment, rape, a lot of blood and bodily fluids and overall weird characters. I think it's one of those books that makes for a better listen than read. Not sure I would have stuck with it if I had read it. less
