review 1: A great historical novel. The servant's eye view of life in the home of a London magistrate was unusual and historically accurate (I've done a lot of research on this period). The mystery and suspense built slowly but that wasn't a problem as I was enjoying the view and the protagonist's character. I have to say the very end felt a little forced to me, but there was a twist I didn't see coming and a satisfying resolution.
review 2: This was one of those few novels I really wanted to hit me with a grand twist at the end. Despite a decent start and some promising turns the whole plot sort of went off track after the Black Death was randomly introduced. Having another gruesome murder take place just as the one suspected/arrested was set free would have been great
... morein maintaining its claim of being a mystery. Ultimately when the killer is revealed the 5 pages of monologue gets unrealistic and sort of contrived. But I will still read this author's sequel to this since everyone needs a second chance. Hoping the sequel can rectify some of the plot problems of the original. less

Well done mystery with enough twists and turns to keep my interest while sneaking in some history.
